Building a business: A Techie’s View Part I

Posted by: Donnie Bachan In: Business| Uncategorized

Building a business is hard. Don’t let anyone tell you different. I know this because I’ve been trying for years to have a business and I’ve been doing everything wrong. I know that I’m doing everything wrong because it has not been successful at all. I have not given up though and will continue to try. Coming from a non-business background is also a bit of a problem but I think I’m getting the grasp of a few very important concepts. Most of this new found education has come from experience, reading, asking and observing. I think the best thing you can do when trying to start a business on your own is to ask questions and observe. This allows you to pick up habits from people who have a better understanding of business and these people are usually very willing, often quite willing to give advice.

Here are a few of the skills I think essential if you are going to be in business:

1. A willingness to learn -

Many people go into things without having an open mind and end up making many costly mistakes. Listen, look and learn and you will succeed. There are many important things to consider other than the services you are offering so pay attention to those around you.

2. Basic accounting skills -

So what is the accountant for? An accountant is very important to have but YOU need to know and understand your basic income and expenses before you even get to the accountant (otherwise, how are you going to know if you can afford the accountant?)

3. Solid understanding of sales -

Let’s face it, if you can’t sell you should get out of business or hire someone who can sell. If you can’t sell one of two things will happen, you will either (i) not get any clients or (ii) will give everything away for way cheaper than it’s worth. Sales people have the knack of being able to get clients and get clients to pay at the asking price!

4. Basic marketing skills -

Okay so you have been doing your profession for years, you’ve worked for hundreds of clients, you have an impeccable portfolio but you still need to market yourself and your business! Even if all your referrals are word of mouth you have to make a marketing effort. People may think that marketing is all about advertising, it’s not, marketing is everything about your outward image. From your physical appearance, to your workmanship it’s all part of marketing and you have to be aware of all these factors.

5. Knowing your client base -

This is especially important simply because you don’t want to try to provide services or products to people who don’t want it and will never buy from you. It will waste your time, their time and will frustrate you! Do your research and know who you are going to target.

I am trying to acquire all of these skills, I’m still learning, but so far implementing these things are showing some promise.
